Plymouth Devon's second City, modern Plymouth comprises the ancient towns of Devonport, Stonehouse and Sutton, with the town of Plympton, once an important town in it's own right, also within the city boundaries. Much of the centre of Plymouth was destroyed during the 1940's Blitz and the main shopping areas were completely rebuilt during the 1950's. The oldest remaining area of the city is The Barbican with it's narrow streets and range of specialist shops, art Galleries, Bars & restaurants. From here the visitor can look out over Sutton harbour where the Pilgrim set sail for America in 1620. A short walk across the harbour is the very modern National Marine Aquarium opened only a few years ago, to replace the old Aquarium which had served the people of Plymouth for many years, the new site has become an attraction for locals and visitors alike. Visitors can enjoy a stroll around The Hoe and see where Sir Francis Drake reputedly played bowls whilst the Spanish Armada sailed up the English Channel. The huge Art Deco swimming pool on the sea front is presently disused but it is hoped to find funding to restore it to it's former glory soon. Plymouth has the range of shops that would be expected in any major town coupled with the olde worlde attraction of the Barbican and the impressive view across Plymouth Sound from the Hoe. It is also a major ferry terminal with Brittany ferries running regular services to Roscoff in France and Santander in Spain. From Plymouth access to Dartmoor could not be easier with regular bus services for those without transport of their own. There are a wide range of places to visit within easy reach and several good beaches not far away.
