Paignton most famous inhabitant was perhaps Rudyard Kipling who lived there in 1896 and was said to have been inspired for one of his books, “The House Surgeon”. There were various spellings of this name: the earliest can be traced to the Domesday Book as Peinton. Other variations include Paington, Paynton, Payington and Paignton. It was officially called Paington as late as 1837. The earliest settlement is believed to have taken place around 700 AD – the name means “the farm of Paega's people”.
